History
The Kolkata Knight Riders, partially owned by Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan, have always remained in the limelight, both for good and bad. The first three years of the franchise, between 2008 and 2011, were forgettable. The owners then decided to part ways with Sourav Ganguly and brought in fearless Gautam Gambhir at the helm.
The results followed instantly, with Gambhir taking the team to its maiden playoffs in 2011, and a year later turned them into champions by beating Chennai Super Kings in the final. New signings Sunil Narine and Robin Uthappa played a major role in the title win.
After a year-long gap, Kolkata once again emerged as the IPL champions in 2014. This time, they beat Punjab in a high-scoring final. The next three years showed promise, but KKR failed to win another title. In 2018, Gambhir was released by the franchise, and in came Dinesh Karthik as the skipper. The team reached the playoffs in 2018, finishing third. In 2020, DK handed over the captaincy to England’s Eoin Morgan midway through the competition. A year later, the World Cup-winning captain took KKR to their third IPL final.
In the last auction, KKR put their faith and money in Shreyas Iyer, but the team finished in seventh place. The Indian batter will lead the franchise in IPL 2023, with the aim to add one more title in their kitty.
