ICC announces new rule change, no caught behind check in stumping review for fielding side

Major rule change by ICC, no more of caught behind check for fielding side during stumping DRS checks

International Cricket Council (ICC) has made some firm changes in its rules that are to be implemented in the New Year, i.e. 2024. The ICC has modified it’s stumping rule which has been been overly exploited by the fielding team. For a stumping check, the DRS checks the caught behind before moving to the stumping. As per the new rules, on a stumping review, only stumping will be checked and not caught behind.

The rules came into effect in December of 2023. Under the normal scenario, during a stumping review, before the side on angles, the caught out is seen. Often teams have exploited this rule to check for caught behind reviews.

But now the rule is changed. For a stumping review, only side on angles will be focused, thereby revoking the extra privilege to the fielding side. Now for a caught behind review, the fielding side will have to appeal separately.

“The change confines a stumping review to only check for stumped, therefore preventing the fielding team a free review for other modes of dismissal (i.e, caught behind) without choosing a player review,” reads ICC’s new rule.

Most notably, Australian keeper Alex Carey came under the spotlight for using stumping reviews multiple times for check caught behind reviews. The incidents took place when Australia visited India back in February-March of 2023 during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
