ZIM beat SL, 2nd ODI: Dasun Shanaka’s maiden century in vain – Zimbabwe scripted a fine 22-run victory over hosts Sri Lanka to level the series 1-1 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday. Zimbabwe skipper Craig Ervine was the architect of the victory with a brilliant knock of 91-off 91 balls while Sikander Raza slammed 57 off 46. Apart from the duo, Regis Chakabva and Sean Williams scored 47 and 48 respectively as Zimbabwe set 303-run target after opting to bat first.

For Sri Lanka, there were no heroes with the ball. With Wanindu Hasaranga rested, Sri Lanka failed to pick up wickets and let the partnerships form. Only Jeffrey Vandersay did some damage returning with 3/51.

Zimbabwe were off to a good start with Takudzwanashe Kaitano and Regis Chakabva setting up 59-run stand for the opening wicket. After Kaitano’s wicket, Ervine set the tone with a 106-run stand with Sean Williams. In the end, Zimbabwe ended up with 302/8 leaving Sri Lanka with a mountain to climb.

During the chase, Sri Lanka stumbled. After going down to 63/4 in 14.3 overs, it was Dasun Shanaka who steadied the ship. With seven fours and 4 sixes, he brought up his maiden ODI ton as he partnered Kamindu Mendis (57) for a 118-run stand. After Mendis departed, Chamika Karunaratne anchored the innings and kept the hopes alive. However, once he was run-out shortly after Dasun Shanaka, all hopes were dented. In the end, Sri Lanka managed 280/9 in 50 overs, falling 23 runs short.
