Yorkshire coach Ottis Gibson on Wednesday revealed the future plans about the Pakistani batter. He also revealed that Shan Masood will lead the club from the 2023 season.

Gibson was addressing the media after the end of Wednesday’s season-ending County Championship defeat against Gloucestershire at Headingley. The coach said that the Pakistan batter, arriving from Derbyshire on a two-year contract, will lead the county in all competitions next summer.

“The conversation we’ve had with Shan is that he is going to be club captain going forwards,” said Gibson. “The players know that. Shan is going to be club captain, and he will bring his own style of leadership,” he added.

Jonny Tattersall led Yorkshire through the final two months of the summer following Steve Patterson’s resignation in late July, the seamer having played his final game on Wednesday.

What is Yorkshire CCC Racism row?

Last year, Yorkshire County Cricket Club was engulfed with allegations of racism. The handling of these allegations regarding racism generated massive controversy, which shocked the whole cricketing world.

Azeem Rafiq is a cricketer who played for Yorkshire CCC for two stints between 2008 and 2018. In 2020, he accused the club of “institutional racism” during his time there. What followed was a list of players who came out with similar experiences as Rafiq.

In an internal investigation, Azeem Rafiq was then found to have experienced “racial abuse and bullying” while playing for the team. However, no one was punished in the said matter.

Yorkshire CCC’s response drew harsh criticism, which led to the resignation of club chairman Roger Hutton. The club’s board of directors and chair then appointed Lord Kamlesh Patel of Bradford.

A six-figure amount was recently received by Rafiq from Yorkshire County Cricket Club.

Lord Kamlesh Patel, the club’s new chair, announced the agreement and vowed that the club will be “anti-racist and anti-discriminatory from this day on.”
