Yashasvi Jaiswal displayed an impressive batting performance on the first day of the first Test against the West Indies. The southpaw looked self-assured as he remained unbeaten on a score of 40 runs, while India trail the Windies by 70 runs in Dominica. Jaiswal became the 306th Test cricketer to represent Team India on Wednesday. The 21-year-old batter’s Test debut was officially confirmed by Indian captain Rohit Sharma prior to the match, and just before the play commenced, he was presented with his first Test cap.

Jaiswal’s impressive performances in both domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League earned him a spot in the Indian team, replacing the experienced Cheteshwar Pujara for the West Indies series. While he played as an opener for the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League, the talented Mumbai batsman typically occupies the No.3 position in the domestic circuit. It is worth mentioning that Jaiswal recently scored a double century for the Rest of India against Madhya Pradesh in the Irani Cup.

Yashasvi Jaiswal had a chance to bat during the final session of the first day’s play. During his time at the crease, the young batter appeared at ease and already hit six boundaries. He and Rohit Sharma have formed a partnership of 80 runs for the first wicket, following India’s successful bowling effort that dismissed the West Indies for 150 runs in their first innings.

India’s prominent spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, made a remarkable impact on the opening day of the Test series. Returning to the playing XI after being on the bench in the WTC 2023 final against Australia last month, the 36-year-old claimed the wickets of five batsmen. Among his dismissals were West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite (20), opening partner Tagenarine Chanderpaul (12), debutant Alick Athanaze (47), pacer Alzarri Joseph (4), and Jomel Warrican (1).
