The match was made official by Adam Pearce in a backstage segment that included Sami Zayn. Sami approached Adam Pearce and Sonya Deville in their office and asked them to give him a proper shot for the Universal Championship. Instead of putting Sami in the Universal Title picture, Pearce suggested that he should compete in the 12-man gauntlet match next week to get a shot at Shinsuke Nakamura’s Intercontinental Championship. Sami didn’t look too pleased but had to agree with the decision.
