In 2015, Billy Gunn, who was then serving as a coach for WWE, was terminated from his position after testing positive for steroids during a weightlifting competition. Meanwhile, in 2016, Brock Lesnar failed a drug test after his UFC fight against Mark Hunt.
However, Lesnar was not fired from WWE despite testing positive for anti-estrogen drugs clomiphene and hydroxy-clomiphene in an out-of-competition drug sample. He faced a one-year ban and was required to pay a $250k fine for his actions in UFC, which set an important precedent for how he was treated within Vince McMahon’s organization. According to Dave Meltzer during Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE’s response to the drug test was indifferent, indicating that the organization was not concerned about the matter.
During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer revealed that Brock Lesnar was an active wrestler and had participated in UFC when he failed a drug test. Meanwhile, Billy Gunn was not actively competing at the time. Despite testing positive (albeit not for steroids), WWE’s response was to dismiss the test as not applying to Lesnar. Meltzer was surprised by this reaction, stating that Lesnar should have been suspended according to the rules of wrestling commissions that regulate the sport.
