WWE News: Veteran referee feels he deserves to be in the WWE Hall of Fame

Most old-school WWE fans might be familiar with the name – Earl Hebner. Born in Richmond, Virginia, Earl joined WWE back in the late 80s when icons like Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant dominate the ringside. For two decades he has been part of some of the biggest matches and revelations in WWE.

But fans might remember him for a totally different reason. Hebner was the manpower behind the Montreal Screwjob, where he rang the bell despite Bret Hart never being tapped out. Since then he became a controversial figure in the franchise. Though he retired from refereeing in 2000 his final dismissal from WWE came when he and his brother were caught selling exclusive WWE merchandise without permission.

Recently, Earl was asked if he would join the WWE Hall of Fame if he were ever offered induction during a recent guest appearance on his son’s show Reffin’ It Up with Brian Hebner. To which he replied…

“Yea, I would consider it. “All the stuff that I’ve done in this business and made a lot of the matches what they are. I think I deserve to be in there. But whether I do or not, it’s up to them.” – [H/T – itrwrestling]

Since leaving WWE, Hebner has been a senior referee in TNA from 2005 – 2017 and has recently been associated with All Elite Wrestling where he is only used for Title Matches.

Although WWE may not have given the legendary Referee a proper induction, on the other hand, his second franchise TNA has already induced him into the Hall of Fame in 2015.

After being forced to leave WWE in 20005. Hebner joined a rival Pro-Wrestling franchise TNA where he served for 12 years as a senior referee. During his time at TNA, he officiated over 1000 matches and kept a rather clean portfolio for himself.

When asked about his induction into the TNA Hall of Fame, Hebner said…

“It meant everything in the world to me in this business. I never thought I would ever get there, in any Hall of Fame, but I did. I was so happy that they recognized how valuable I was. They still have referees that are valuable, but they sort of broke the ice in knowing that in order for this business to succeed, they have to have a good ref. It’s good that they noticed that and gave me the opportunity to be in the Hall of Fame, and I will never forget that night or what they did for me.”

At 73 years Hebner is still rocking it as a Senior Referee in All Elite Wrestling, an organization he joined in 2019.
