In an interview with “The New York Times,” the 50-year-old took us back to the time when he debuted as a babyface in WWE. He also mentioned that Vince McMahon helped him master the art of donning a heel persona.

“Before I became a great bad guy, I came in as the babyface [the good guy]. I was told, ‘You can’t smile enough.’ Vince McMahon told me that. ‘You have to go out there and be grateful to be here.’ I was booed in every arena across the country. So I did have to withstand that kind of vitriol. By the time I did turn heel, I couldn’t have opened my arms wider to get them boos, to come in and embrace them.(via – Inside the Ropes)

The Rock marks the Attitude Era as a “very special time” in pro wrestling

The Attitude Era in WWE got underway in the late 1990s and continued till the early 2000s. Dwayne Johnson was a key part of the success of the promotion during that time with his rivalry with Stone Cold Steve Austin being a highlight.

Speaking in the same interview, the former world champion explained that the type of violent content produced during that time is not possible during the modern era. He also admitted to picking up the traits of a heel character during that time.

“That Attitude Era, I call it a very special time in the world of pro wrestling. The company wasn’t publicly traded, so we flew under the radar. And some of the things — many of the things — that we were able to get away with, we’d be in big trouble these days. But that time as a heel really did teach me that you could do anything — as long as your reason why is relatable.” (via – Inside the Ropes)
