The Indian wrestling squad for the Paris 2024 Olympics will be a finalised from a two-step qualification process, where the wrestlers who have earned the quota for the country, will be up against a challenger, as per a report in PTI. It is important to note that only Antim Panghal has won a quota for India so far after winning a bronze medal in the women’s 53 kg category, at the World Championships.
Antim vs Vinesh, Bajrang vs Vishal
This means that we could witness a mouth-watering Antim Panghal vs Vinesh Phogat clash in June next year if the latter manages to win the trials. The ad-hoc committee mentioned that the challengers will be decided on May 31, and the bout for the Paris 2024 Olympics will take place on June 1. Not just that, Bajrang Punia, India’s best best in men’s65 kg category could be seen fighting Vishal Kaliraman, with whom he had a long feud after he former was selected for the Asian Games, without trials.
How Will Indian Wrestlers Get Paris 2024 Olympic Quotas
There are a couple of more chances for top Indian wrestlers like Bajrang Punia and Ravi Dahiya to get the Paris 2024 quotas. The Asian Olympic qualifier will take place in Kyrgyzstan from April 19-21, and post that the World Olympic Qualifier will take place in Turkey from May 9 to 12. As many as 17 more Indian wrestlers can get the Olympic quotas still, six in men’s freestyle, six in greco roman, and five in women’s freestyle.
How Will Indian Team be Selected for Olympic Qualifiers?
The trials for the Olympic qualifiers will be conducted in February next year, in all the categories.
