WWE News: Shawn Michaels comments current relationship with former rival in WWE
Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart were engaged in a long backstage rivalry that lasted several years until both men agreed to settle things. The rivalry included the Montreal Screwjob match which is infamously remembered for Vince McMahon’s manipulation of the script as the referee awarded the win to Michaels on the CEO’s orders despite Bret Hart not tapping out to the submission locked in. The bout took place at the Survivor Series PPV in 1997.
While speaking on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Michaels said that the rivalry was not an easy thing to pull off.
“When everything is said and done, that was hard on both of us. It’s like an out of body experience. I have nothing in common with the person that I was then. Bret and I always talk about it – there was a friendship there before. There really was. And to have damaged that…and to have wanted to mend it for so many years…we could never get it done”.
He also explained that he appreciates the fact that Bret Hart genuinely looks at him as a friend now.
“It means a lot to both of us when we see each other now, and I always appreciate he always looks at me and says, ‘We’re good. We’re good, Shawn’, and that means a lot because I know it’s genuine. Bret doesn’t say stuff just to say it. Bret is not a mincer of words, and he means that. It’s one of those things, you don’t wanna go the rest of your life not having that healed.” [H/T Sportskeeda]

In 1996, Shawn Michaels won the Royal Rumble to challenge then WWE Champion Bret Hart at WrestleMania XII. Both men competed in an Iron Man match where the Heartbreak Kid won his first WWE Title.
In Hart’s Autobiographical DVD, Bret The Hitman Hart: Best There is Best There Was And Best There Ever Will Be, he mentioned how Shawn Michaels showed disrespect following the match. Gradually, Mr. WrestleMania continued to mock Hart, saying, “Get the f*** out of my ring, this is my moment.”
