Australia have boosted their chances of appearing at next year’s ICC World Test Championship final and put a big dent in South Africa’s hopes with a dominant victory over the Proteas in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.
The 12 points Australia receives for the win takes them to 132 points from 14 matches this period, with their win-percentage boosted to an impressive 78.57% following the victory.
Australia are currently well placed for a maiden appearance at the World Test Championship final at The Oval next year, with five Tests remaining this period (one against South Africa in Sydney and four in India during February and March) before the finalists are determined.
The Proteas arrived in Australia in second place on the standings and with expectations high, but back-to-back losses has seen Dean Elgar’s side slip to fourth on the updated table.
India hold on to second spot on the standings with a 58.93% win-percentage and Sri Lanka (53.33%) rise to third and in front of South Africa (50%) after the Proteas’ efforts in Melbourne.
What India need to do to ensure WTC FINAL Qualification?
- India are currently 2nd on POINTS TABLE
- They will have to win minimum 4 of remaining 5 Tests – i.e 1 against Bangladesh & 4 vs Australia at home.
- If they win all 6: Their win PERCENTAGE will rise to 68.06 – which will surely take them through to the FINALS
- If they win 5-1: Their percentage will be 62.5, which still will ensure FINAL entry for India and exit for 2nd placed South Africa.
- If they lose 2 of 6 tests: It will be unlikely that India will qualify for WTC Finals

The recent results – Australia hammering West Indies 2-0 at home and England beating Pakistan in their backyard has shook up things in the points table. However, four teams are still in contention, with Australia having their nose ahead at the moment.
Team India can only focus on what’s under their control and not worry about what others are doing.
Their first task would be to register 2-0 series win over minnows Bangladesh in their backyard. The Tigers have shown excellent improvement in white-ball cricket over the years, but their credentials in test cricket are yet to be established.
Apart from some good wins, Bangladesh has yet to put up a team performance in red-ball cricket. Team India has its own share of issues, to begin with players battling injuries. For them, the roadmap is pretty clear moving ahead.
Covering all bases, #TeamIndia trained in Chattogram ahead of our 1st Test against Bangladesh.

It is an important series for Team India, with their hopes of a WTC final appearance hanging in the balance. India need to win all of their remaining five games to stand a chance to play the summit clash at the Oval. The start has been a good one, and it is all about maintaining the momentum from here on.
