WTC Final: Frustrated with India’s recent injury troubles, India Cricket Team head coach Rahul Dravid will meet NCA chief VVS Laxman and NCA’s sports science head Nitin Patel. There will be tough questions for Patel to answer considering a number of big guns are out. Jasprit Bumrah and Shreyas Iyer are set for long time on the sidelines. Both have been victims of NCA’s mismanagement of injuries apart from Ravindra Jadeja. Deepak Chahar too hasn’t recovered from his injury as his struggle continues with a hamstring problem. Dravid and his coaching entourage will meet the NCA top brass to understand the current issues. Then, they will work out a plan for WTC Final and ICC World Cup 2023. India will face Australia in the WTC Final on June 7 at Oval.
“Dravid along with batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, fielding coach T Dilip and the other support staff will be meeting the NCA team headed by VVS Laxman to discuss various issues related to senior team,” PTI quoted a BCCI source.

While the initial idea was to ask franchises put out a workload management plan, BCCI has refrained from it. Instead, the NCA is monitoring the workload of players, especially players.
VVS Laxman is currently responsible for injury and workload management of centrally contracted players. With BCCI selection committee shortlisting 20 players for World Cup as well as Emerging Players, NCA are also monitoring them closely.
As per PTI, Dravid and Laxman along with the coaching team will discuss the workload management plan extensively to prepare for the WTC Final.
WTC Final: Workload management still a problem in IPL 2023
Most of the IPL franchises have confirmed to PTI that there has been no written communication from the BCCI to them on workload management of fast bowlers during the event.
The five pacers, who are certain to make the main WTC squad list, if fully fit, are Mohammed Shami (GT), Umesh Yadav (KKR), Mohammed Siraj (RCB), Shardul Thakur (KKR) and Jaydev Unadkat (LSG).
“The two balls are very different and it’s important that the players amp up their workload to be ready. They will hardly get a week to prepare for the WTC Final. But of course, they will be monitored closely by the franchise physios and they will report directly to the NCA on workload,” a BCCI official told InsideSport.
A noted coach, who has been a key support staff member of the Indian cricket team, accepted that it is a problem.
“Currently all the Indian pacers need to bowl at least 200 deliveries (33 overs approximately) per week (7 days). That’s how you build the miles (in simple words stamina) in your legs,” he said,
“But in IPL, the main star bowlers would hardly come for each and every training session. You will mostly see them getting rest a day before the game as one day before that, there is travelling. The heavy travelling part actually can cause more injuries and hence they won’t be able to bowl in training,” the former coach said.
Skipper Rohit Sharma had said after the Australia series that all first team bowlers would be given red Dukes ball to train with.
