WFI’s Sanjay Singh asserts Nationals will happen despite warning from Sports Ministry

Suspended WFI president Sanjay Singh asserted that the Nationals would take place in Pune despite the warnings from Sports Ministry

Suspended Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Sanjay Singh on Monday asserted that the national championships would take place in Pune as per the federation’s plan. Singh’s remarks come amid the Sports Ministry threatening that the event would be ‘unrecogonised’ and ‘unsanctioned’.

Unbothered by Ministry threats, WFI president sticks to his words

Having constantly opposed the Ministry’s move to suspend WFI, Singh reiterated that the body was democratically elected. Speaking to TOI, he said that he had already written to the UWW asking them to lift the suspension as there was an elected body in place headed by him. Further, he asserted that the Nationals would take place in Pune and that a circular has been circulated to all state members about the same.

The IOC decided to suspend the WFI back in August of 2023. Sanjay Singh who won the elections back on 21st December, was suspended just 3 days letter by the Sports Ministry of India for breaching it’s own constitutional rules.

Why has UWW suspended WFI?

As a result an IOA ad-hoc panel consisting of 3 members have been tasked to deal with the day to day activities of the WFI. Sanjay Singh has claimed that the IOA’s influence in wrestling should be deemed illegal by the IWW
