Suspended WFI president makes a U-turn, says would appeal to ministry for ban revocation

Suspended WFI president makes a U-turn, says would appeal to ministry for ban revocation

Just after three days of winning the WFI elections, Sanjay Singh's wrestling federation was banned by the sports ministry on December 24.

The WFI suspended president Sanjay Singh has not given up hopes of getting the federation ban revoked. Earlier, while the Brij Bhushan Singh aide wanted to go through the legal route, now Singh seems to have changed his stance a bit. He said, that he will appeal for revocation of the suspension, through a dialogue with the sports ministry.

Following a meeting of the suspended WFI, Singh said that they did not want a clash with the government. “We do not want a clash with the government. We are not moving court as of today. We will seek time from the ministry and a delegation will try and speak with the government,” Sanjay Singh told PTI after the meeting.

“First we have to try. We want to know what we need to do to get the suspension lifted. Like UWW had set certain conditions when it had suspended. The ground was not holding elections. The government has suspended us but there is no clarity how it will be lifted.”

Meanwhile, despite the suspension, the WFI wants to conduct the nationals. Singh went on to say that Indian wrestling is at a loss because of all this. “See, we did not have all entries for the Zagreb Open. We had Aman winning a gold medal but no national anthem was played and the tri-colour was not hoisted.

“The athlete plays for such moments and they can drape themselves in national flag but it did not happen because of the UWW suspension. So many weight categories went unrepresented and this is not good for wrestlers and Indian wrestling.”
