The incident happened on the third ball of the fourth over of the first innings as MI looked in trouble after losing early wickets to a fantastic spell from Marizanne Kapp. Shikha bowled it full on the pads as Mathews looked to drive the ball but ended up hitting it uppishly to the right of mid-on, where Jemimah dived to take a superb low catch.
Delhi Capitals Women won the toss earlier in the evening and opted to field. The decision was proved right by their seamers, who decimated the Mumbai batting line-up and didn’t allow any of the batters to stick around.
Marizanne Kapp started the destruction by dismissing Yastika Bhatia and Nat Sciver-Brunt in successive deliveries of the second over Chasing a small target of 110, DC openers Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning came out all guns blazing taking the attack to the MI bowlers. Both added 56 runs for the first wicket in just 4.2 overs before Hayley Matthews provided the team with the first breakthrough by dismissing the dangerous Shafali (33 off 15).
Then Alice Capsey came and outplayed the bowlers to smash five biggies and score an unbeaten 38 runs off 17 balls, adding 54 runs for the second wicket alongside Lanning (32* off 22), who anchored the innings. In the last ball of the 9th over, DC cruised past the victory line.
