Wimbledon Final 2021 – Ash Barty Wimbledon Champion: She won the opening set comfortably in the match, but Pliskova bounced back in the second set that entered a tie-breaker. Barty kept her cool to win the deciding set 6-3 and earn her second grand slam title after Roland Garros 2019.
“I hope I made Evonne proud,” Barty said on court after the trophy presentation. “This is incredible.”
This is the first time that a Wimbledon women’s final went to a third and deciding set since 2012. Nine years ago, Serena Williams had defeated Agnieszka Radwanska in three sets at the women’s final at the Centre Court.
Notably, Ash Barty is Australia’s first female Wimbledon singles champion since her hero, Evonne Goolagong Cawley, won title 41 years ago.
The second set went back and forth, but in the end, Pliskova managed to win it, sending the match into the third and deciding set.
On Sunday, the Wimbledon men’s final will be contested between Novak Djokovic and seventh seed Matteo Berrettini.
Djokovic has already won the Australian Open and French Open this year and he has 19 Grand Slam titles to his name.
