Neeraj Chopra becomes World Champion, wins historic gold in Javelin Throw

Neeraj Chopra is the overwhelming favourite to win the historic gold medal in the World Athletics Championships 2023. The Olympic champion headlines action in the Men's Javelin Throw final.

World Athletics Championships: Men’s Javelin Final– Neeraj Chopra made the nation proud yet again as he bagged the historic gold medal in the World Athletics Championships 2023 on Sunday, 27th August. The Olympic champion got his hands on the yellow metal after recording a massive 88.17m throw in the final. With the victory, he became the first-ever Indian to finish on top of the podium in the prestigious event.

In the final, he began with a foul throw in his very first attempt. By the end of Round 1, he was the only athlete to not register a throw. However he made a terrific comeback and registered a massive 88.17m throw in his second attempt. This secured him the place at the top spot. It was also his best throw as in his remaining attempts, he achieved distances of 86.32m, 84.64m, 87.73m, and 83.98m.

Having set a mark, it was then upto his other competitors who were trying their best to go past the Indian. Only Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem came close to him as he registered a 87.82m throw. With this, the India Pakistan rivalry in Men’s Javelin Throw also lived up to his billing.

However the Pakistani, who is the reigning Commonwealth Games champion could not go past Neeraj as he bagged the silver medal. He also created history by becoming the first-ever athlete from Pakistan to win a medal in the World Championships. Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch bagged the bronze medal with a 86.67m throw.

Meanwhile, two more Indians featured in the final in Kishore Jena and DP Manu. They also produced remarkable performance to finish within the Top 8. Jena recorded a personal best throw of 84.77m and finished fifth, while Manu finished in 6th place with a best throw of 84.14m.

With the victory Neeraj Chopra has won every tournament in which he has featured in 2023. He is also only the second Indian after Abhinav Bindra to win the OOlympic medal and the World Championship back-to-back. By becoming the World Champion, Neeraj Chopra also has now won every title in his sport. He is currently the reigning champion in the Olympics, Diamond League, Asian Games. He has also won the gold medal in the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Championships.
