The Pro Kabaddi League for men has been a big success. The premier Men’s Kabaddi tournament is now in its 10th year. Now an annual league for women’s kabaddi is being planned on similar lines as that of the PKL.
According to a release, Anupam Goswami, CEO, Mashal Sports & League Commissioner of PKL stated, “Our plans for a professional women’s Kabaddi league are based on the success we have seen in the men’s league. It is also our commitment to grow kabaddi as a modern world-class sport from India. We will be working with our various stakeholders, including the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI) and the International Kabaddi Federation (IKF) to launch the women’s league.”
Mashal Sports had earlier organised a Women’s Kabaddi Challenge in 2016. The three-team test tournament was conducted with the support and sanction of AKFI. Women Kabaddi players from the country were divided into three teams – Firebirds, IceDivas and StormQueens. However the league was scrapped the following year.
