WIPL 2023: Women Premier League – Not Women’s Indian Premier League, the newly formed tournament is likely to be called Women’s Premier League or WPL for short. BCCI confirmed that there would be no “Indian” in the new tournament. Furthermore, with franchises distributed, the new owners are already preparing to name their sides. Adani Sportsline confirmed that their Ahmedabad franchise will be called Gujarat Giants. They also have a kabaddi team in Pro Kabaddi League with the same name. “The BCCI had issued an Invitation to Tender to acquire the right to own and operate 5 (five) franchises in the WPL. The 5 (five) franchises will participate in the inaugural season of the WPL. It is subject to the bidders completing the post-bid formalities as specified in the Invitation to Tender document,” BCCI said in a statement.

3 IPL teams and two new entrants have splashed a combined Rs Rs 4669.99 Cr to bag five founding teams of Women’s IPL. Adani Group after failing to land an IPL team last time out has finally entered Indian cricket with the highest bid of Rs 1,289 Cr. They will operate the Ahmedabad franchise. Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals are 3 IPL teams who will own WIPL teams as well. The other new entrant is Capri Global who owns team in ILT20.

Reliance-backed Mumbai Indians were the 2nd highest bidder with Rs 912 Cr and will operate Mumbai franchise. Diageo-backed RCB will operate from Bengaluru after bagging the team for Rs 901 Cr. JSW-GMR-backed Delhi Capitals will operate Delhi franchise after splashing Rs 810 Cr. Capri Global has bagged the Lucknow franchise for Rs 757 Cr.

Ahmedabad Franchise to be called Gujarat Giants? – Adani Sportsline-backed Ahmedabad franchise is likely to be called Gujarat Giants. While the tournament will be played in Mumbai completely, Ahmedabad will be their home base. Adani-backed Gujarat Giants is already a team in Pro Kabaddi League.

“The Indian women’s cricket team has been doing exceptionally well. A cricket league for women is a significant step in creating more opportunities for women through sports,” said Mr Pranav Adani, Director, Adani Enterprises.

“Cricket is an inseparable part of the country’s fabric. Adani Sportsline was keen to begin their association with the sport with the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League. While I wish every other franchise the very best, I look forward to the Gujarat Giants standing out as the top team in this new, exciting league.”
