WIPL 2023: With just four months remaining to launch the inaugural Women’s IPL, BCCI is yet to announce their plans. The major point that is yet to be public is the process to acquire a franchise. However, as per a News18 report, the BCCI is mulling a base price of close to Rs 400 crore. It was the same base price that BCCI set for Men’s IPL franchises back in 2008. As reported by InsideSport already, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings will have their WIPL teams and are ready to pick up tender documents as soon as BCCI announces it. 5 other IPL teams have also shown interest. Follow Women’s IPL 2023 on InsideSport.IN.

Last month, the BCCI approved a five-team WIPL at the AGM. The board also finalised a 22-match format for the tournament. Existing men’s IPL franchises too have shown interest in acquiring the franchises. However, till now the stakeholders are undecided on how to distribute the franchises.

“We will be interested in purchasing a Women’s IPL team once we get information on the due process. We have not received any intimation from BCCI so far,” a CSK official had earlier told InsideSport.

WIPL 2023: All you need to know:

  • BCCI is set to roll out a tender document to the franchises willing to buy the teams.
  • The base price is likely to be set at $50 million, the same as IPL franchise fee in 2008.
  • However, instead of giving first preference to IPL teams, BCCI will float a tender open to all interested parties.
  • With this, new players can also outbid IPL franchises.
  • The BCCI will also float a separate tender for the e-auction of the broadcast rights.
  • The BCCI is also busy seeking the availability of leading women’s cricketers around the world.
  • As per a News18 report, the BCCI has already begun signing contracts with India as well as overseas players.
  • The move will help to confirm foreign players’ availability in Women’s IPL.
  • This central contract will further lead to an agreement with the franchise, once the team decides to buy the player.
  • Initially, the players will undergo a draft instead of auction in place for the men’s IPL.
  • Like the men’s IPL. Four overseas players will play in the eleven and a squad can have a maximum of 18 players.

The tournament is likely to begin in the second week of March in 2023 and conclude around March 23. Instead of home and away system, the WIPL will move in a caravan style with two or more cities hosting matches.

“We would like to have non-traditional IPL venues for WIPL. However, you cannot expect a large crowd for women’s matches in every city. To get to that stage, we have to prepare accordingly. The discussions are on to start at the traditional cricket hubs and rotate the venues in future editions,” a senior BCCI official had told InsideSport earlier.

The tournament will be played over two weeks with 22 matches. The WIPL will follow the league and playoff format with the top team qualifying directly for the final. 2nd and 3rd placed teams will play the eliminator. The team’s owners are set to be finalised by December.
