Jannik Sinner vs Roman Safiullin

Eighth seed Jannik Sinner broke new ground at Wimbledon on Tuesday as the Italian powered into the semi-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time with a 6-4 3-6 6-2 6-2 win over big-hitting Russian Roman Safiullin.

The 21-year-old has made the most of a favourable draw at the grasscourt major this year and became the first man to reach the final four without taking on a top 50 opponent since both Boris Becker and Pete Sampras did so in 1995.

Novak Djokovic vs Andrey Rublev

Favourite Novak Djokovic found himself behind for the first time at this year’s Wimbledon but responded in brutal fashion to beat Andrey Rublev 4-6 6-1 6-4 6-3 and reach the semi-finals on Tuesday for the 12th time.

Inspired seventh seed Rublev snatched the opening set but it was akin to poking a sleeping grizzly bear as Djokovic exacted painful punishment to stay on track for a fifth straight title.

Jessica Pegula vs Marketa Vondrousova

Unseeded Marketa Vondrousova reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon with a roller-coaster 6-4 2-6 6-4 win over American Jessica Pegula in the last eight on Tuesday.

The Czech came through a topsy-turvy encounter on Court One against the fourth seed to book a clash with Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina.

“It was very tough and just an amazing feeling … I never played here on court number one. It’s amazing. I just wanted to stay as long as I could and fought until the end and I’m just so happy. I cannot believe it, actually,” she said on court.

For Pegula, it was another quarter-final heartbreak, having never gone beyond the last eight at a Grand Slam.

Iga Swiatek vs Elina Svitolina

Even the world’s best players are not immune to crippling nerves as Iga Swiatek discovered when her Wimbledon dreams were turned to dust in a 7-5 6-7(5) 6-2 quarter-final defeat by Ukrainian wildcard Elina Svitolina on Tuesday.

Svitolina, who returned to the tour in April after giving birth to her daughter last October, might have been facing an opponent who was riding high on a 14-match winning streak but she never stopped believing even when she was on the receiving end of some brutal shots from the four-time Grand Slam champion.

After almost three hours of nerve-jangling drama, Svitolina gave her war-ravaged homeland something to cheer about when she pulled off the biggest upset of this year’s championships.
