Wimbledon 2022 LIVE: The world is gearing up to witness one of the greatest Grand Slam events in Tennis as the Wimbledon is less than a week away. While winning a single title here is a dream for many tennis stars, great players like Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf and Serena Williams have won multiple titles and left an indelible mark in the tournament’s rich history. Martina Navratilova – 9 Titles

The legendary Martina Navratilova was the first player in the history of Wimbledon to clinch the title nine times. The first of her nine titles came in the year 1978, as she beat Chris Evert after coming from a set behind to win her first title at the event. She came back next year and yet again met Evert in the summit clash and won it this time in straight sets to defend her title.

After three years, she met Evert yet again in the 1982 final and won the game 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 to win the title. After her win in 1982, she continued to win the titles for five straight years until 1987. She became the first women to win five successive titles at the Wimbledon with the streak. She reached the final in 1988 but her run was ended by Steffie Graf. Navratilova won her ninth title in 1990 and with the victory she won the Wimbledon in three different decades.

Helen Wills – 8 titles

Helen Wills was the first woman in the history of Wimbledon to win a record eight titles. She is the only women to achieve the feat in the amateur era and held the record for more than 50 years until Navratilova broke it by winning her ninth title.

She won four consecutive titles from 1927 to 1931 and became the second woman to achieve the feat after Suzanne Lenglen, who won five consecutive titles between 1919 and 1923. After missing the title in 1932, she came back to win two successive titles in 1933 and 1933. Her last three titles came in the year 1935, 196 and 1938 to etch her name in the annals of Wimbledon.

Serena Williams – 7 Titles

Modern day great Serena Williams comes third in this list, having won seven Wimbledon titles. The American legend is chasing her eighth title and will be seen in action this year after a year-long injury lay-off as she has accepted a wildcard to participate in this event.

The first of Williams’ seven titles came in the year 2002 when she beat her sister Venus, who was a two-time defending champion. She won the match with a 7-6, 6-3 victory to clinch her maiden title. Serena successfully defended her title next year in what was a repeat of the previous year’s final as she beat her sister Venus with a come-from behind victory in three sets.

After two runner-up finishes Serena finally clinched her third title in 2009 by yet again overcoming her sibling in straight sets. She went on to defend her title next year by winning the final against Vera Zvonareva. In 2012, she equalled her sister Venus by winning five Wimbledon titles as she defeated Agnieszka Radwanska in three sets. With the victory, she also became the oldest winner at the Grand Slam event. By defeating Garbine Muguruza and Angelique Kerber in 2015 and 2016, she won her seventh title becoming the first player in the 21st century to achieve the feat.

Steffi Graf – 7 titles

Steffi Graf was one of the best players of her generation and she dominated on almost all the surfaces. After losing against Martina Navratilova in the 1987 final as an 18-year old, Graf came back to win her maiden title by defeating Navratilova in the 1987 final. She did not stop with just one victory as she went on to defend her title in the next year yet again by winning against Navratilova in the final.

After missing out in the subsequent year, she came back in 1990 to win her third Wimbledon title by defeating Gabriela Sabatini in three sets in the final. She continued to achieve hat-trick of titles by clinching the championship in 1991, 1992 and 1993. She went on to win two more titles in 1995 and 1996 by defeating Spain’s Arantxa Sanchez Vicario on both the occasions.

Billie Jean King – 6 titles 

Billie Jean King is a former great who played in both the Amateur as well as the Open era. She played alongside big players like  Chris Evert and Margaret Court and carved a special niche for herself by lifting six Wimbledon titles.

She won her first Wimbledon title in the amateur era in 1966 by defeating Brazil’s Maria Bueno. She continued to defend her title the next year with a straight set victory against Ann Jones in the final. With it, she became the last winner of Wimbledon’s amateur era. She also became the first champion in the Open Era as she won her third straight title in 1968 by defeating Judy Teggard in straight sets. In 1972 and 73, she won her next two titles and became the first women to win three Wimbledon titles in the Open era. Her sixth Wimbledon victory came in the year 1975.
