Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi (1999 Men’s Doubles Titles)

Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi dominated the doubles circuit in World Tennis in the last 90s and 2000s. The formidable Indian duo notched up many victories and one of the most important and landmark victory in their career is their title-winning run in the 1999 Wimbledon.

Having already won the French Open title in the same year, the Lee-Hesh pair entered the Wimbledon as the World No.1. They met Netherlands’ Paul Haarhuis and Jared Palmer in the Wimbledon final and won the match with a hard fought 6-7, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 to become the first-ever Indian pair to win Wimbledon title. The pair won three Grand Slam titles in total and still hold the record for the longest streak of doubles victories in the Davis Cup.

Sania Mirza (2015 Women’s Doubles Title)

Sania Mirza finally realised her dream of winning the Wimbledon title as at the age of 28, she, alng with her partner Martina Hingis won the 2015 Women’s doubles title. The pair beat Russian dueo Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina 5-7, 7-6, 7-5 in a nail-biting final. In fact, in the final, they were trailing 2-5 but the duo made a brilliant comeback to get their hands on the title.

With the victory, Sania became the first-ever Indian woman to win the Wimbledon title. This was also the pair’s fourth victory in the same year as earlier that year they had won titles at Indian Wells Masters, Miami Open and the Charleston Open.

Ramanathan Krishnan – 1954 Boys Singles Champion

Ramanathan Krishnan (1954 Boys Singles Champion)

Ramanathan Krishnan was India’s first-ever Tennis player, who made the world take notice of his talent. He was among the World’s best and always rubbed shoulders with the top Tennis players during the 1960s and 1970s.

It all however began for Ramanathan at the Wimbledon, where as a 17-year old he won the Junior Boy’s title. He defeated Australia’s Ashley Cooper to create history by becoming the first Asian player to be crowned as the Boy’s Singles champion at Wimbledon.

He went on to create many more feats and in 1960 and 1961 he reached the semifinals in the Gentlemen’s Singles at the Wimbledon. He is still the only Indian to have reached the semifinals in any Grand Slam event.

Ramesh Krishnan – 1979 Boys Singles Champion

Ramesh Krishnan (1979 Boys Singles Champion)

Like father, Like son. After Ramathan Krishnan’s heroics in the 1954 Junior championship, 25 years later, his son Ramesh Krishnan became the second Indian to lift the Junior title at the Wimbledon. He defeated Dave Siegler in the final to win the 1979 championship.

He went on to reach as high as World No.23 in his professional career and was a three Grand Slam quarterfinalist, including the Wimbledon, where he went till the quarterfinal in 1986.

Leander Paes – 1990 Boys Singles Champion

Leander Paes (1990 Boys Singles Champion)

Leander Paes is currently the only Indian to have won both the Junior as well as the senior title at the Wimbledon. Before winning the Men’s doubles title along with partner Mahesh Bhupathi, Paes won the junior title in 1990 by defeating Marcos Onsruska in the final. It was just the beginning of an illustrous career as Pes went on to win an Olympic Bronze Medal in 1996. He later shifted his focus to Doubles and won eight Grand Slam titles.

Sumit Nagal (2015 Boys Doubles Champion) 

When Sania Mirza created history by becoming the first-ever Indian woman to win the Wimbledon title in 2015 by clinching the Women’s Doubles, in the junior tournament, Sumit Nagal ended a 25-year wait for India at the All England Club as he was crowned as the champion in the boy’s doubles. He partnered Vietnam’s Nam Hoang Ly and the duo defeated fourth seed Reilly Opelka and Akira Santillan in straight sets in the final. With the win, Nagal became the sixth Indian to clinch a Grand Slam Junior title.
