With this victory Novak Djokovic moved into his 50th Grand Slam quarter-final, a total only exceeded by Roger Federer, who has 57 – and a few years on the Serb.
This was not the most demanding of Manic Monday encounters for Djokovic, more a gentle work-out for the rigours of the week to come. Cristian Garin, the No.17 seed, did stretch the champion in a second set that lasted nearly an hour, but the first and third stanzas were rattled off.
Only twice in the match did the Chilean manage to push Djokovic’s serve to deuce, and on neither occasion could he force an advantage point, never mind push it home.
Djokovic was thus able to go put his feet up, sit in an ice bath, or simply chill in the locker room and contemplate his 12th Wimbledon quarter-final.
Meanwhile, on court No.2, Marton Fuscovics and Andrey Rublev, one of whom Djokovic will face in the last eight, were into a fifth set and third hour…
Djokovic was the hot favourite to win the contest in his quest to close his gap for the 20th grand slam. He is coming on the back of wins over Denis Kudla, Kevin Anderson and Jack Draper in the previous rounds. Notably, The Serbian is just one grand slam away to equal Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
