After some brillinat bowling and Shamarh Brooks knock of 79, the Caribbean team defeated New Zealand in the first ODI by 5 Wickets. Akeal Hosein and Alzarri Joseph took 3 Wickets each for the West Indies each to bowl out the Kiwis for just 190.

Nicholas Pooran | West Indies captain: We looked at the surface and it seemed dry. Against Australia last time, it played similar. We felt like three spinners would be a good idea. Was about taking a risk and it worked out for us.

Kane Williamson | New Zealand captain: I thought we couldn’t get any rhythm to our batting, so credit to the West Indies bowlers. I thought they put on a complete performance. West Indies batted well and we couldn’t extract enough either.
