What is time out? Watch Angelo Mathews create history, first cricketer to be given ‘time out’

Angelo Matthews becomes first player to be dismissed in 'Time Out' in International cricket in BAN vs SL clash

What is cricket without drama? And the same was depicted when Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews was timed out in the BAN vs SL World Cup clash. This has been the first time such an incident of being time out has taken place in International Cricket. As per the MCC rule, a new batter must be ready to face a ball within 2 minutes (in ODIs) of the previous batter being out or retired.

But Sri Lanka’s Angelo Mathews took more than 3 minutes to be ready to face his next delivery. The Bangladesh team grew impatient with the delay and appealed to the umpires. The umpires agreed despite Matthews trying his best to plead his case. Ultimately, Shakib didn’t withdraw his appeal and the veteran all-rounder was given out.

The rule states – 40.1.1 – After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.

Angelo Matthews Dismissal

Angelo Mathews has been dismissed in a bizarre way! The veteran all-rounder was the next batter to take the field after Sadeera Samarawickrama was dismissed. But Mathews took a slow pace to make it to the crease. He also took a wrong helmet with him to the crease and then called on a substitute to get a replacement helmet.

But the Bangladesh players got tired of the wait. Shakib al Hasan appealed to the umpires who got engaged in a long conversation. A bewildered Mathews tried his best to reason with Shakib and the umpires to plead his case. Had Shakib withdrawn his appeal, Mathews would have got a life. But the Bangladesh skipper decided otherwise and Mathewshad to walk back, thereby becoming the first-ever player in International cricket to be dismissed in time out.
