After winning the toss for the IND vs NZ match in Dharamshala Indian skipper Rohit Sharma decided to have a bowl. While that may seem normal, his reason behind the decision has left some wondering. Skipper Rohit opined after winning the toss that he felt the dew would come in and that would help India in the second innings. But what is dew? and what factor does dew play in cricket? What is dew in cricket?
During a cricket match, there are a lot of phases. These phases see the atmosphere and pitch change as the game progresses. A factor that nullifies these changes is dew. With games starting at 2 p.m. in the ongoing World Cup 2023, dew comes into play.
Dew is the aftermath of a process called condensation, due to which, the moisture in the air turns into water as the night sets in.
Because of dew, the ball becomes damp and soft due to the regular contact with the wet grass on the ground. Instead of providing assistance and grip to the bowlers, the ball often slips out of hand, making it difficult for the bowlers to contain/control the batters.

Dew factor reason behind Rohit Sharma’s decision to bat second
The dew played a big role in India batting second, after winning the toss, Rohit Sharma said:
We’ll bowl first. No reason, we were here training yesterday and felt a bit of dew comes in. Looks like a good pitch, we’ll back ourselves to chase. Quite important to keep the momentum going, forget what happened in the past. Need to be at it all the time. This is one place everyone wants to come and play, beautiful weather and nice stadium.
