WFI Elections delayed to July 11, Objection raised on Brij Bhushan Singh’s son in-law in voting list

Few members also objected to the notion of former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh's family members voting in the polls, claiming they were 'illegally nominated' to the state association

Wrestlers Protest: The IOA ad hoc panel rescheduled the WFI elections for July 11 after five disaffiliated state bodies presented their cases in a session on Wednesday. State bodies in Maharashtra, Haryana, Telangana, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh approached the three-member panel. Furthermore, objections have been raised on the presence of Brij Bhushan’s family members in voting list

“The state units presented their case, while the representatives of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) defended their decision to cancel affiliations of these bodies. The panel needs time to decide and prepare the order, so polls have been pushed to July 11,” a source privy to the developments told PTI.

As per Indian Express, a few members also objected to the notion of former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh’s family members voting in the polls, claiming they were ‘illegally nominated’ to the state association.

Objections have been raised over the inclusion of Brij Bhushan’s son-in-law Vishal Singh in the voters’ list. Vishal is the president of the Bihar Wrestling Association (BWA)

The postponement means that the WFI elections will now take place 11 days later than the original June 30 deadline set by Sports Minister Anurag Thakur following his June 7 meeting with the protesting wrestlers. During the meeting, it was determined that no one from Brij Bhushan’s family would be permitted to run for critical positions. Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, and Vinesh Phogat would have a large role in determining who would be president, general secretary, and treasurer.
