After a shocking defeat to Scotland by seven wickets in the World Cup 2023 Super Sixes, West Indies will not participate in the ODI World Cup for the first time since it’s inception in 1975. Windies, who became the first team to win the World Cup in 1975, made three consecutive final in 1975, 1979 and 1983. The shocking loss to India in the final of the 1983 World Cup was the beginning of the end for West Indies.
With their elimination from the 13th edition of the ODI World Cup, find out how the former champions have fared in the World Cup through the years:
Prudential World Cup 1975, 1979 & 1983
The golden period of Windies cricket saw them win the first two World Cups while losing a third one to underdogs India. Led by Clive Llyod in their first three World Cups, the Windies beat Australia in 1975, and England in 1979 but lost to India in 1983. During this time, the Men in Maroon’s stars were skipper Llyod, swashbuckling star Viv Richards and pace quarter consisting of Roberts, Marshall, Garner, and Holding.
Reliance World Cup 1987
This time, the Windies side was led by Viv Richards, and it was the first time that they failed to make the semi-finals after losing to Pakistan and England, as the side saw several stalwarts in Llyod, Holding, Garner, and Roberts leave.

World Cup 1992 and 1996
Led by Richie Richardson during the time, West Indies failed to make it to the 1992 semi-finals but bounced back in 1996. The 1996 World Cup was a tumultuous one for Windies, with shock loss to Kenya, not taking the field against Sri Lanka due to security reasons and losing out on a fourth final by just 5 runs.
World Cup 1999, 2003 and 2007
Under the helms of Brian Lara in 1999 and Carl Hooper in 2003, WI found themselves falling in the group stages. The home World Cup in 2007 saw them thrash Pakistan, Zimbabwe, and Ireland in the group stage and reach the Super Eight Stage, but an abysmal performance in the last eight saw them win just one out of their six games.
World Cup 2011 and 2015
A period that saw West Indies cricket rejuvenate after 15 years of mediocrity. Under Darren Sammy in 2011 and Jason Holder in 2015, they reached the quarterfinals. They failed to cross the quarterfinal barrier both times, however, showing their vulnerability on the big stage and against good teams. They lost by 10 wickets to Pakistan in 2011 and by 143 runs to New Zealand in 2015.
World Cup 2019 and 2023
The losses to Scotland, the Netherlands, and Zimbabwe in the World Cup 2023 Qualifiers should not come as a shock to fans. WI ended 9th in the World Cup 2019 with only two wins: Pakistan and Afghanistan. They were even beaten by Bangladesh and were ahead of only Afghanistan in the points table. This year, the West Indies even failed to qualify directly for the World Cup, as they were ranked 10th in the ODI Team Rankings.
