After falling just short of winning the Europa League on Wednesday night, Jose Mourinho dramatically waved at Roma’s supporters and threw his runners-up medal into the crowd, which was gobbled up by a fan.
Prior to Roma’s trip to Budapest, Mourinho had a spotless record in European finals. However, he witnessed his team lose 4-1 on penalties to Sevilla, giving the Spanish team their seventh Europa League championship in as few as 17 years.
Mourinho quickly made his way down the tunnel after tossing his runners-up medal into the crowd in the direction of a Roma supporter. Since Mourinho has drawn interest from a number of European clubs as well as organizations in Saudi Arabia, much of this season has been spent speculating about the Portuguese manager’s future at Roma.
Speculation of his exit will only grow after the Europa League final on Wednesday, as the veteran boss appeared to wave sentimentally at Roma’s supporters before retiring to the dressing room.
Roma’s manager pointed out that he doesn’t like keeping silver medals, which is why he gave it away to a fan. He said, ‘That’s what I did, I don’t want silver medals. I don’t keep silver medals, so I gave it away.’
Jose Mourinho angry with refereeing
Mourinho, who was booked in the closing minutes of extra time, hit out at Taylor’s performance in the final and called his future at Roma into question.
Talking about staying at Roma and about the referee, Mourinho said, ‘I want to stay at Roma. But my players deserve more and I also deserve more. ‘I’m a little tired of being a coach, a man of communication, the face of the club that says we were robbed after every game. I’m tired of acting on every front.’
He continued, ‘Next year we won’t be playing the Champions League and that’s a good thing because we’re not made for it. And let’s hope that Taylor, only officiates games in the Champions League and does the same bull**** there that he did tonight, and not in the Europa League.’
Even though it does look like Mourinho is attached to Roma and all the fans, this could be the time when he decides to move onto new pastures. There were rumors that PSG was very keen on getting Mourinho to the Parc de Princes. Will it happen though? Only time will tell.
