WATCH: How Teofimo Lopez Lose His Only Boxing Fight: Boxing News: Teofimo is an American professional boxer and a unified lightweight world champion. Lopez, a local hero, was supported by a boisterous crowd at Madison Square Garden but ultimately lost to the underdog Kambosos after being eliminated in the first round.

He wasn’t defeated by a dubious call made by the judges or the referee, nor was he knocked out by an errant stroke. He lost because he was outclassed for the vast majority of the fight’s 12 rounds.

When Teofimo Lopez faced George Kambosos Jr. on November 27 at Madison Square Garden, his life actually was in jeopardy.

The champion was defeated by a powerful Kambosos overhand right in the first round, knocking the Brooklyn native to the canvas.

Kambosos, whom Lopez later put on the ground with what was later adjudged to be a slip, had punished Lopez for flying out of the traps with venom.

By the conclusion of the second, he had fully recovered and regained control. In the third, he injured the Sydney native with a number of hard shots.

Lopez was competing while suffering from pneumomediastinum, and physicians discovered that he had “extensive air in the retropharyngeal space” when he visited the emergency room after the fight. According to Dr Linda Dahl, an otolaryngologist, Lopez “could have died” as a result.

Dr Dahl continued that she “can’t even explain” how Lopez managed to breathe while suffering from that condition.

She described it as ‘like someone tied a set of 300-pound weights around his chest… like his neck and chest were in a vice’. “That’s the way he battled.”

Since their first press conference in April for the original fight date in June, the two had been harbouring tremendous animosity towards one another, and as the bout went on, it became clear from their abrasive exchanges.

Through seven rounds, the fight remained competitive, with the challenger appearing at ease in the presence of one of the best fighters in the world, pound for pound.

However, Lopez appeared to turn the tide in the eighth round, nearly knocking the opponent out in a big flurry at the close of the round.

With a superb shot that clipped Kambosos in the ninth and felled the Australian in the tenth, he brought the crowd to its feet and dramatically reversed the score.
