Borussia Dortmund: Dortmund were two points ahead of Bayern Munich as all Bundesliga teams approached the last match of the season. Irrespective of Bayern’s result today, Dortmund needed just one win to become the Bundesliga Champions after 11 years of waiting. However, Dortmund managed to lose this all-important match against Mainz who have lost all of their last 4 league matches. Dortmund gave a tough competition to Bayern Munich this season as they remained on their tail. They even spent a lot of time on the top of the table. Even as they approached the last game of the season, they were in the first position with two points ahead of Bayern Munich.
Bayern faced mid-table Koln on the road while Dortmund welcomed Mainz at home. Bayern obviously needed a win but irrespective of their result, Dortmund needed an absolute win to secure the title for themselves.
Mainz have lost all four of their last League games. However, their game before those four defeats was against Bayern in late April and they managed to defeat the Champions 3-1 at that time. Hence, it was surely a tough but extremely important job for Dortmund to win this match against Mainz. However, drama ensued in Germany on the last match week of the Bundesliga as Bayern came away with a 1-2 win on the road against Koln. Whereas, Dortmund could only manage a 2-2 draw.

Now both teams have the same 71 points after 34 matches and Bayern have clinched the Bundesliga title on a larger goal difference. Bayern have a goal difference of 54 goals while Dortmund are far behind them with a difference of 39 goals.
This could have been Dortmund’s Bundesliga title win after 11 years and they had the most ideal situation to win it. However, as they have managed to bottle this perfect opportunity fans have taken over the internet and reacted on how historically Dortmund have messed up.
Fans are calling it the biggest bottle job and comparing it to Arsenal’s situation in Premier League saying Dortmund did it worse than Arsenal. One fan wrote, “Dortmund outdid Arsenal for Bottle d’or.” Another fan said, “Yikes… if what Arsenal did with EPL title was bottling then I think we need stronger verbiage to describe this Dortmund bottle job.” A third fan wrote, “Dortmund showed they are the Bottle FC. Doing it in at home in front the fans >>>”
