The incident occurred during the second set in the match. Cornet lost the first set 3-6 against the defencing champion. She gave a good fight in the second and the scores were level 5-5. While trying to hit a return from Rybakina, Cornet was moving towards her left but her right leg got stuck and she fell in splits injuring her thigh in the process. She gave out a loud cry and was left in tears.
A concerned Rybakina soon rushed to check upon her. Unable to move, Cornet soon called for a medical timeout. She took treatment on the court and it looked as if she might not be able to get bakc to action. However with a heavy strapping she got back to action. Cornet took the set into the tie-breaker but Rybakina got the better of her.
Cornet caused a major upset in the tournament last year. She ended Iga Swiatek’s 37-match winning streak in the third round. However this year, she had to bow out from the second round.
Rybakina enters third round
“I started the match good. I had good energy but in the second set it became tougher,” Rybakina, who took Wimbledon by storm to win the title last year, said on court.
“It was a tricky long game and also Alize’s fall. It was a tough match but I’m happy to win in two sets.” Elena Rybakina meanwhile will face wildcard Katie Boulter, Britain’s last remaining player in the third round.
