14 Years of Virat Kohli in ODIs: Kohli, India’s most dependable batter in ODIs

After the retirement of Sachin Tendulkar in ODIs in 2011, a lot of experts and fans were concerned about who will carry the workload in the batting department. But then came a brash young boy from Delhi, was ready to take ownership and win matches for India singlehandedly. Within just three years, Kohli became a permanent member of the ODI squad and established himself as the team’s most dependable batter.

Kohli the Chase Master

The former India captain soon became a fan of hunting down targets set by the opposition team. Kohli would thrive on run-chases and has so far scored 7306 runs in 149 matches that India has batted second. He has scored 26 hundreds and averages 66.41. It is the most by any batter and it also demonstrates Kohli’s eternal love for run chases.

Kohli the Run-machine

Before Hashim Amla became the fastest person to score 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, and 6000 runs, Kohli owned that record. The India batter is still the fastest to 9000, 10,000, 11,000, and 12,000 runs. He is also behind only Tendulkar when it comes to having the most ODI hundreds. Kohli currently has 43 and overall, 70 international hundred.

Kohli the Fearless leader

As a captain, Kohli instilled a fearless attitude in the team. He also brought fitness culture and backed players to the core. Under his leadership, bowlers became more aggressive. As a captain, Kohli scored 5449 runs in 95 matches with the highest score of 160. India won 65 matches and lost only 27 matches in the 95 matches that he was ODI sipper from 2017 to 2022.

Kohli not finished yet

With Kohli failing to score 100 for close to three years, talks are going on he should be dropped or quit one format of the game. But as legendary cricketer Brain Lara said, “you can never write off a Virat Kohli.” With Asia Cup and T20 World Cup 2022 coming, Kohli will yet again like do his bat to all the talking.
