Virat Kohli Resigns – Team India informed before BCCI: All has not been well between Virat Kohli and the BCCI’s top bosses. Such has been the communication gap between the two parties that Kohli this time informed his teammates in South Africa about his decision to QUIT Test captaincy on Friday. But the board came to know about it only on Saturday at 3 PM – Follow Indian Cricket LIVE Updates on InsideSport.IN

InsideSport has learnt from its sources, Kohli during the team meeting in NEWLANDS Dressing Room informed everyone that ‘he has decided to resign from test captaincy’. He also requested the team members and the members of coaching staff to keep the news to themselves and not reveal to anyone.

The team was left completely stunned by Kohli’s disclosure.

When & how was BCCI informed? No one in the board had a idea about Kohli’s decision till Saturday 3PM.

The sources close to top BCCI officials informed that BCCI Sec Jay Shah got a brief call from Kohli around 3PM. It is not clear whether BCCI President Sourav Ganguly recieved a call from Kohli or not.

Jay Shah was informed by Kohli that ‘he is leaving test captaincy’.

Kohli’s sudden disclosure did take him by surprise. But no attempt was made to request Kohli to ‘reconsider the decision’

“He had made up his mind to quit Test captaincy. There was no point requesting him”, a source has been quoted by The Telegraph.

Did the Chairman of Selection Committee got a call? InsideSport could not verify that whether Kohli gave a call to Chetan Sharma, the chairman of selection committe or not.

Repeated attempts to connect with Sharma remained futile.

Though two other selectors informed InsideSport that, ‘they are unaware of any call to the selection committee by Kohli’

It’s clear that Kohli even before the South Africa tour had made up his mind to quit test captaincy.

Was it in the wake of his REMOVAL as ODI captain? Was he upset because of that? Was he upset by the BCCI’s comments or lack of communication on board’s part? Was he upset with the selection committee?

Despite of number of theories doing the rounds – at this stage it is hard to get to the bottom of it. Probably no one else than Kohli & the concerned in the BCCI knows the reality.

Whatever it is – the team in South Africa was left completely stunned by Kohli’s decision.

No one according to a source was expecting such a development. Rahul Dravid was the first one to congratulate him on a great career after the team meeting, followed by stunned members of team India.

“Everything has to come to a halt at some stage and for me as Test captain of India, it’s now.”, Kohli said in his parting note to the team.

Did he planned in advance to Quit? Kohli, it is widely believed, had planned to quit even before the series in South Africa began. He wished to go out on a winning note but that was not to be.

Kohli read the writing on the wall once Ravi Shastri’s term as head coach ended and Dravid took charge. He realised that his authority and control on the team had diminished. With Rohit Sharma taking over as limited overs captain, his powers were further curtailed.

It is really unfortunate that someone whose passion remains Test cricket has decided not to be the captain when he plays his 100th Test in Bangalore versus Sri Lanka.
