According to reports in Amar Ujala, the UP government is searching for land in the Rajatalab Tehsil. Notably, cricket fans of Varanasi have been deprived of live cricket action for long, since there is no international standard stadium in the region.

The Dr Sampurnanda Stadium, also known as the Sigra Stadium, is the biggest cricket stadium in Varanasi, but it does not stage international cricket matches. Meanwhile, there are many cricket camps in Varanasi but the local experts feel that the lack of infrastructure has played a key role in the failure of the region to produce world-class cricketers for the Indian team.

Speaking on the development, Uttar Pradesh’s state team cricketer said “There is no dearth of talent among the youth of Purvanchal. Due to lack of resources and facilities, the talent of many talented players does not take flight. In such a situation, with the construction of an international cricket stadium, Banaras will emerge as a hub of cricket.”
Meanwhile, the regional sports officer RP Singh said “There is a plan to build an international level cricket stadium from the Sports Department. For this, about 32 acres of land is being searched by the Revenue Department in Rajatalab Tehsil.”
Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh has an IPL team in Lucknow Super Giants. Though KL Rahul’s team’s home ground happens to be the Ekana Stadium, it will be interesting to see if the new proposed stadium gets to host any IPL games.
