Not just the Premier League, last year’s World Cup also had few VAR controversies. FIFA World Cup has seen the introduction of the Virtual Assistant Referee to help officiate games. It consists of a team of three people that monitor various video angles and have the power to overturn calls on the field. VAR has seen a record number of overturned goals in different Europan leagues.
In most cases, VAR backfired on teams and they always blamed VAR on their defeats. Recently, Pep Guardiola felt that VAR hurt Man City more compare to other teams. Arsenal dropped points against Brentford due to poor VAR.
Manchester United was playing against Southampton and Casemiro was handed a red card from Anthony Taylor. He was given the marching order for a foul on Carlos Alcaraz.
The former Real Madrid star launched a tackle in a bid to restrict the Southampton player but his foot slid into his studs having the initial contact with the ball. Anthony Taylor came to action and the Brazilian earned yellow. Now, VAR took the role in converting this card to red. Taylor reviewed the footage on the monitor and decided to upgrade the decision.

Social media also went crazy on Casemiro’s red call. Anthony Taylor’s role was questioned. He showed Red card when Casemiro’s leg clearly slipped off the ball. Meanwhile, Bruno was fouled in the box but he was not given. This whole drama disturbed Man United and Erik ten Hag’s men played out a goalless draw against a relegation-zoned side.
Anthony Taylor was the same ref that moved our wall further back for Lucas Digne’s free-kick goal for Aston Villa, and today he denied us a clear penalty.
He should NEVER be allowed to officiate a Manchester United game ever again. pic.twitter.com/11LXE6XAoy

Will be interesting to see if Anthony Taylor referees #mufc again this season. United contacted PGMOL in November over Taylor putting their wall back five yards further away in defeat at Villa when Lucas Digne scored.

In another story, the VAR call was questioned when Barcelona was playing against the Athletic club in La Liga. It didn’t Barca as they came out winners in this controversial game. Barcelona is already involved in controversy over its payments to the company of a former refereeing committee official.
The drama stars with a VAR decision. In the 87th minute, Bilbao forward Iñaki Williams scored a goal that was disallowed for a handball in the buildup. The review of Williams’ goal took nearly three minutes. The video review was also used to confirm Barcelona’s winning goal by Raphinha after it was initially disallowed for offside.
Yesterday, we were almost robbed by Gil Manzano. Our goal was wrongfully ruled out for offside. VAR had to intervene. There was a clear handball leading to Iñaki’s goal, Manzano let it slide. But somehow it’s Barça’s fault that VAR was doing the job it was brought in for. pic.twitter.com/vTKjghydLz

Bilbao coach Ernesto Valverde expressed his disappointment and said. “We are upset. Nobody on the field had seen anything, not even the referee or the fourth official or the other assistants.”
“I thought they were looking at offsides, but then I saw it on the video board, and I think it was a handball,” Barcelona coach Xavi said on this VAR Call controversy.”
