Taylor Fritz vs Jakub Mensik

Ninth seed Taylor Fritz schooled Czech teenager Jakub Mensik in the third round to advance to the round of 16 for the first time. Fritz put on a 90-minute masterclass to dismiss the unseeded 18-year-old. Fritz ended the match with a bagel in the 3rd set, beating Mensik 6-1, 6-2, 6-0.

The top American won 80 out of the 115 points played in the match, as Mensik scrapped to get just 3 games in the match.

Fritz will now face Swiss qualifier Dominic Stricker in round 16.

Novak Djokovic vs Laslo Djere

World No. 1 and 3-time champion Novak Djokovic entered the US Open round of 16 after claiming a tough 5-set win over compatriot Laslo Djere. Djokovic looked rusty in the first two sets as a red-hot Djere claimed the first two sets, 6-4, 6-4.

Djokovic then dug deep and showed why he is considered to be one of the best players of all. From a 2-0 set deficit, Djokovic lost just five games in the last three sets to win the match. The Serb did something similar 12 years ago when he beat Roger Federer from 2-0 down in the semifinals.

The nine-time finalist will face Croatian qualifier Borno Gojo in his round-of-16 match on September 3.

Coco Gauff vs Elise Mertens

Sixth seed Coco Gauff completed a 3-set comeback win over Elise Mertens in the US Open 2023 3rd round. Coco, who started working with Brad Gilbert recently, is now on an 8-match win streak. After losing just a set on her Cincinnati Masters title run, Gauff is now into the 4th round, dropping just one set on the way.

After being outplayed in the first set, Gauff crawled back and beat Merten 6-3, 6-0 in the last two sets.

The 6th seed will now face former Grand Slam champion Caroline Wozniacki in the round of 16 of the US Open 2023. Wozniacki made her comeback to the tour after 3 years last month.

Elena Rybakina vs Sorana Cirstea

Elena Rybakina’s disappointing second half of the year continues. After failing to reach the semifinals in the last two slams, Rybakina has now exited the US Open 2023 in the third round.

Rybakina went down to tour veteran Sorana Cirstea in three tight sets: 3-6, 7-6(6), 4-6. The former Wimbledon champion’s poor show at Flushing Meadows continues after her failure to reach the 4th round for the sixth consecutive time.

Cirstea will now face Olympic gold medalist Belinda Bencic in the round of 16.
