In the first set, Alcaraz started off positively by breaking Ruud’s serve to take 2-1 lead. However, after few minutes, when Alcaraz was serving at 4-3, the Spaniard played a drop shot close to the net and Ruud got to the ball too late and returned after the second bounce. However umpire failed to notice it and expecting a call from the umpire, Alcaraz hit his return in the net. However the umpire gave the point to Casper Ruud. Immediately Alcaraz expressed his disappointment.
At this juncture, an equally confused Ruud walked up to the umpire and confessed that he played the shot after the ball bounced twice and conceded the point. “Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr Ruud has just confirmed that the ball bounced twice. The point goes to Mr Alcaraz,” said the chair umpire immediately. With that point Alcaraz went 15-0 up and this sportsmanship was much appreciated by the crowd at the stadium.
