US Open 2021 Qualifiers LIVE: Ramkumar Ramanathan’s US Open dream ends, loses to Evgeny Donskoy 6-4, 6-7, 4-6 – India No.3 ranked player Ramkumar Ramanathan wait for a maiden Grand Slam appearance continues after the 26-year-old went down to Russia’s Evgeny Donskoy in three sets. After Sumit Nagal’s disappointing defeat earlier in the day, all hopes were pinned on Ramanathan to proceed further and inch closer to qualification for the main US Open draw. The 26-year-old had made it to the Qualifier 2 and qualifier 3 at Roland Garros and Wimbledon but bowed out in the first qualifier at the US Open 2021.
Ramkumar Ramanathan had the perfect start to his US Open 2021 campaign, pushing Donskoy to the edge with some proactive tennis. The Indian tennis star was duly rewarded for his game plan, clinching the first set comfortably by a 6-4 margin. However, his Russian opponent stepped up his game in a tightly contested second set, which Donskoy eventually clinched with a tie-breaker. In the third set, the 26-year-old from Chennai looked a shadow of his former self, with his opponent breaking him up with some ease to clinch the set and the match 6-4, 6-7, 4-6.

Ramkumar Ramanathan was at his best while serving, but failed to convert his breaks which eventually cost him progression at the US Open 2021. The Indian ace converted only two of his eight breakpoints and while he reigned supreme in his first serve, his second serve did not pack the same venom and will be something the 26-year-old will be keen to work on.

India at US Open 2021 LIVE: Ankita Raina, Sumit Nagal also crash out
Earlier in the day, Sumit Nagal and Ankita Raina suffered a similar fate in the US Open 2021, as they both lost their qualifying games in three sets. The latter put up a good effort and did well to pounce on US’ Jamie Loeb’s mistakes, but her unforced errors cost her the tie and progression into the next round.
Sumit Nagal also showed similar grit to come back from a set down to force a decider in his clash against Argentina’s Juan Pablo Ficovich. Nagal went down in the first set but roared back in contention with some brilliant returns in the second, only to be outclassed in the decider, which put an end to his US Open 2021 campaign.
