Transfer Drama at PSG again, Mbappe refuses to sign contract extension

PSG suffers as Messi leaves, Mbappé rejects contract extension, forcing the club to contemplate selling their star player.

PSG has suffered yet another setback after losing Lionel Messi. In a letter received this Monday afternoon, Kylian Mbappe formally told PSG that he would not exercise his contract option for one more year (until 2025). PSG is perplexed by this choice. Mbappé will either stay with the capital club or be sold.

Paris Saint-Germain are considering selling Kylian Mbappe this summer after he informed the club in a letter that he would not renew his contract beyond 2024. That is when the Frenchman’s current contract expires, which means he will be available for free transfer in a year.

That move had been strongly considered by Real Madrid, but L’Equipe is now saying that PSG would be hesitant to allow Mbappe go as a free agent, implying that he may be sold this summer.

Despite growing attention from Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid, the 23-year-old had already committed his future to the capital club for the next season. However, the option to extend his contract by one additional year, up to 2025, will not be exercised.

It is as a result of the French forward’s particular requests, which were detailed in a written letter given to the team on Monday. After spending €180 million (£155 million/$194 million) for Mbappe in 2018, PSG is thinking about getting at least a portion of their original investment back.

Mbappé is one of the most marketable sportsmen in the world, and he is the foundation of the club’s efforts to restore its identity around a core of elite French talent. Mbappé’s choice may compel PSG to explore a move it would rather avoid: selling Mbappé’s playing rights as early as this summer.

Rather than risk losing him for nothing when his contract ends next year. If the club does accept proposals for Mbappé, P.S.G. may expect a fee well in excess of $200 million, which might break the global record for a player.

The news is really important for Real. The 14-time European Champions just recently bid farewell to forward veteran Karim Benzema, who announced his retirement from Real Madrid after 14 years.

Los Blancos are already looking for a forward, having contacted Chelsea about the availability of Kai Havertz, but the possibility to sign their top target as early as this summer may be too much to pass up.
