MS Dhoni to Virat Kohli: Players with most losses IPL history

Leading the list, Virat Kohli holds the record for the most losses in IPL history.

While the Indian Premier League (IPL) is celebrated for thrilling performances and incredible victories, even some of the tournament’s greatest players have experienced significant setbacks. Losing matches is an inevitable aspect of competitive cricket, and for some players, their longevity in the league has also meant being part of more defeats. Despite this, many of these players have left an indelible mark on the IPL through their performances and contributions. Here, we explore the top five players with the most losses in IPL history—cricketers who, despite the odds, have showcased remarkable talent and resilience.

Most losses in IPL history

Shikhar Dhawan Nicknamed “Gabbar,” Shikhar Dhawan stands fifth on the list of players with the most IPL losses. In 222 matches, he has been on the losing side 108 times. Despite this, Dhawan’s stellar record includes 6,769 runs at a strike rate of 127.14 and an impressive average of 35.26.

MS Dhoni With the highest number of matches played in IPL history, MS Dhoni is fourth on the list. Across 264 matches, he has scored 5,243 runs at a strike rate of 137.54 and an average of 39.13. While Dhoni has led Chennai Super Kings to five IPL titles, he has also faced numerous defeats, making this statistic an interesting paradox.

Rohit Sharma Rohit Sharma ranks third for the most IPL losses, having faced defeat in 119 matches out of 257 played. Despite this, Rohit has been a consistent performer, amassing 6,628 runs with a strike rate of 131.14 during his stellar career.

Dinesh Karthik Dinesh Karthik takes the second spot, with a notable record of 4,842 runs at a strike rate of 135.36. Known for representing several IPL franchises, Karthik retired after playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Virat Kohli Leading the list, Virat Kohli holds the record for the most losses in IPL history. From 2008 to 2024, he played 252 matches and scored 8,004 runs at a strike rate of 131.97 and an average of 38.67. While Kohli is the IPL’s highest run-scorer, this statistic underscores the challenges his teams have faced over the years.
