India’s T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav, addressed the ongoing discussions around his possible return to Test cricket, sharing that he is in no rush and is willing to give it the time it needs.
As India gears up for their four-match T20I series against South Africa, Suryakumar highlighted his focus on leading the T20 team and treating each format as it comes. Suryakumar opens up on Test cricket
Suryakumar has become a key player in India’s T20I setup, taking over the captaincy after Rohit Sharma retired from T20 cricket following India’s victory in the T20 World Cup 2024. “Test comeback, when the time comes, it will happen by itself. I am playing all domestic tournaments, be it red-ball or white-ball. If it has to happen, it will happen. I have learned a lot from Rohit (Sharma) bhaji,” said Suryakumar, reflecting on his approach to Test cricket.
A single test appearance so far for Surya
The 34-year-old batter has played only one Test, which was against Australia in Nagpur in 2023. Although he showed potential, he hasn’t returned to the format since then. As the Indian Test squad prepares for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, his absence suggests that his primary focus is still on white-ball cricket, particularly his role as the T20I captain.
