The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) isn’t going to take a call on Rohit Sharma‘s Test career just yet. Right now, all the talks are about him leading the India cricket team to another ICC title and whether he’ll continue playing ODIs, but amid all of this, BCCI has to discuss whether Rohit will be part of India’s tour of England.
Selectors were unsure about Test future
The 5-Test series will start on June 20, and although it is still far away, BCCI has to plan for it. After the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) concluded, it wasn’t sure whether the selectors would want to persist with Rohit. But the Indian captain confirmed that he isn’t retiring.
“This is not a decision of retirement. I am not moving away from this game. But I took a decision to step away from this game because I was not able to score runs with the bat,” Rohit had said in January.
IPL 2025 could save Rohit Sharma’s Test career
Selectors may have been wooed by recent results. The fact that Rohit has won the 2025 Champions Trophy, his second ICC title in 9 months, does change things. BCCI won’t take a call on his Test career just yet. They’ll see how Rohit performs for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season.
“Let the IPL be over first. Only an astrologer thinks so far ahead into the future,” a BCCI source told Cricbuzz.
While it doesn’t make sense to select someone in Tests based on IPL performance since there won’t be any cricket in between the IPL 2025 season and the England vs. Test series, the BCCI will have to judge Rohit on his T20 record. Also, one mustn’t forget that Rohit was India’s best Test player from 2020 onwards to his slump last year.
He has shown the desire to play Test cricket. In January, he played domestic red-ball cricket (Ranji Trophy) after a decade. The commitment is there. The talent is there. And given his performance in the Champions Trophy 2025, Rohit’s form isn’t too bad either.
