Jake Shields, a UFC veteran, expressed confusion on Twitter by asking, “What exactly did Tou Thao do wrong?” in response to the news of Thao’s sentencing. On Monday, Tou Thao, the ex-Minneapolis police officer who restrained a group of bystanders during George Floyd’s deadly arrest in May 2020, received a four-year and nine-month prison sentence for aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.

A Minneapolis judge has handed a four-year and nine-month prison sentence to Tou Thao, a former police officer, for aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.
Thao, who held back bystanders during George Floyd’s fatal arrest in May 2020, made a brief statement about his involvement in Floyd’s death before being sentenced in a Minnesota courthouse.
The conclusion of the sentencing represents the conclusion of a series of state and federal trials for the four former officers implicated in George Floyd’s death.
Thao, along with Derek Chauvin, Thomas Lane, and J. Alexander Kueng, were fired and arrested for their roles – or lack thereof – in the incident that took place in May 2020.
During the incident, Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck and back for over nine minutes while Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, was handcuffed and lying on his stomach.
All the former officers have been convicted of crimes in the years following the incident.
George Floyd’s death has resulted in substantial transformations within Minneapolis and its police force. As part of a lawsuit settlement, the city of Minneapolis agreed to pay $27 million to Floyd’s estate.
