Which UFC Fighters Will Compete This Weekend?
In honour of Mexican Independence Day, the Ultimate Fighting Championship will hold Noche UFC 2023: Grasso vs. Shevchenko 2 (also known as UFC on ESPN+ 85 or UFC Fight Night 227), which will feature a flyweight title fight as its main event on Saturday, which is 16th of September.
Big fights are often held on September 16th in combat sports, and this year, for the first time ever, UFC will host the inaugural Noche UFC on Mexican Independence Day at T-Mobile Arena.
The high-stakes main event will feature a title rematch between No. 1 rated contender Valentina Shevchenko and UFC women’s flyweight champion Alexa Grasso, the first Mexican woman to win a UFC title. The native of Guadalajara, Jalisco, upset the odds by defeating the unbeaten Shevchenko at UFC 285 in March.
On that particular occasion, the Mexican had a highly disciplined and reliable boxing approach, making crisp combinations. And when Shevchenko missed a spinning back kick in the fourth round, exposing her back, she didn’t let the chance slip away.
Jumping onto her back, Grasso delivered a mata Leon to the neck of the feared boxer at the time, who weighed 125 pounds. The then-29-year-old was declared the first Mexican UFC champion as a result of the submission.
Aiming to break James Della Maddalena’s 15-fight winning run and move into the top 10 of the welterweight rankings, No. 13-ranked Kevin Holland will compete in the co-main event of Noche UFC 2023.
On the main programme, Terrence Mitchell and Raul Rosas Jr., both winners of contracts from Dana White’s Contender Series (DWCS), face off at bantamweight after Daniel Zellhuber and Christos Giagos battle it out in the lightweight class.
