The 30-year-old athlete bravely revealed another stage of her legal issues with her separated husband in an interview with Ariel Helwani for MMA Hour. Dern disclosed that she had taken legal action against Santos for domestic abuse.
Mackenzie Dern said, “So I feel like I’ve been having to defend myself this whole time for things that I never thought I’d have to defend myself for,” she said, latter adding, “I was in a situation in my relationship where I couldn’t even defend myself, because I was getting, like, threatened that if I did anything, I’d be talking to the police and I could lose my daughter.
“So, I stayed in my relationship because I believed in the family, and I believe that that’s what God wanted and stuff. But there’s a certain point where you try, try and try, and things don’t change, and it just keeps getting worse and worse. And then, like I was saying, I wasn’t even able to defend myself. … Like, police were getting called to the house. It was just getting out of control, and going through that in front of your daughter, you don’t want your daughter to witness that.”
Dern also charges Santos with beating her two dogs frequently, a charge he refutes. By denying her access to sponsorship money she received in a Brazilian bank account, using her credit card for unauthorised transactions, and faking a lease renewal on the flat they had shared, she claims he engaged in financial abuse.
The court imposed shared custody of Moa despite not siding with Dern or Santos on the allegations of abuse, concluding that the pair may have participated in physical altercations during the claimed abuse episodes. However, Dern, who was determined to be the primary provider in contrast to Santos, the stay-at-home parent, was mandated to pay $10,000 of her estranged husband’s legal expenses. She was also mandated to pay him $4,006 a month in spousal and child support.
