Only 11 days after his fight in Harris County, Texas, Lewis (27-11 MMA, 18-9 UFC), a veteran heavyweight contender who will face Jailton Almeida (19-2 MMA, 5-0 UFC), was taken into custody and charged with a crime for allegedly speeding in a 50 mph zone. This weekend’s main event takes place at Ginasio Do Ibirapuera in Sao Paulo.

UFC Heavyweight Contender Arrested For Reckless Driving
According to Harris County court documents, UFC fighter Derrick Lewis was taken into custody in Houston this month on suspicion of reckless driving.
Four days prior to the heavyweight champion’s appearance on a UFC Fight Night card in São Paulo, Brazil, authorities made the arrest public. According to Fox 26 Houston, Lewis was allegedly speeding in a red Lamborghini at 136 mph in a 50 mph zone. School buses are said to have been on the road when he performed the hazardous lane changes and weaved in and out of lines.
Lewis, 38, was accused of a misdemeanor and, if found guilty, could spend up to 30 days in jail and/or pay a fine of up to $200. On a $100 recognizance bail, he was sent free.
ESPN claims that Lewis is in Brazil and already participating in combat activities, indicating that his arrest apparently had no bearing on his travel plans. Curtis Blaydes, who was originally scheduled to compete against rising talent Jailton Almeida, withdrew earlier this month for undisclosed reasons, leaving Lewis as the stand-in.
Lewis has signed a new eight-fight contract with the UFC, following one of his greatest career nights. After stopping Marcos Rogério de Lima with a flying knee to end his three-fight losing streak, the veteran went on to deliver one of the year’s most entertaining post-fight interviews.
