Though Charles Oliveira expressed surprise at fresh rumors of a fight in January at UFC 297, he is excitedly awaiting a date for his rematch with Islam Makhachev.
At UFC 294 this past month, Oliveira (34-9 MMA, 22-9 UFC) was forced to withdraw from his scheduled rematch with lightweight champion Makhachev (25-1 MMA, 14-1 UFC). During one of his last training sessions, he cut his eye, forcing him to withdraw and be replaced by Alexander Volkanovski, who was eliminated in the opening frame.

CEO of the UFC Dana White stated that scheduling Oliveira vs. Makhachev 2 at 155 pounds would be interesting, but it would depend on how soon Oliveira’s cut healed. The Brazilian claims that he is getting close to resuming full contact training.
Charles Oliveira said: “I don’t have any planned, scheduled fights at the moment. We get to take our time to get a good recovery, so I might go back into training in about a week or so.”
According to MMA writer Ariel Helwani’s story on Saturday, the organization is in the process of arranging for the rematch to take place at UFC 297 on January 20, most likely in Toronto. Oliveira says he hasn’t heard from anyone with any proposals and that he was not aware of it.
In October 2022, Oliveira lost by submission in the second round of their bout for the vacant championship at UFC 280 against Makhachev. After defeating Beneil Dariush in the second round of UFC 289 in June, “Do Bronx” bounced back and will try to exact revenge and reclaim the title as soon as the official announcement is made.
